What is Fire Cylinder?

Fire Cylinder is the second name of a fire extinguisher. Some people don’t know what is a fire extinguisher. People also call the fire cylinder “Agg bhujanay wala Cylinder”. But there is no difference between all these. Fire cylinder is just a fire fighting equipment. People use it to tackle the fire. A fire cylinder is one of the most commonly used fire fighting equipment. It is basically fire protection equipment. It protects people and property from fire damages. If a fire breaks out in any kind of building, then a fire cylinder can help in controlling and fighting against the fire.

A fire cylinder is just a cylinder made of metal (steel, aluminium, plastic, etc.). The cylinder contains an extinguishing agent which can be a powder, gas, liquid or foam. The extinguishing agent is any material that can cool down the burning substance and smother the fire. the extinguishing agent can be water, Dry Chemical Powder, Carbon dioxide gas, Foam or certain clean agents.

The fire cylinder contains different types of fire extinguishing agent because fires are of different type and the different extinguishing agent is used to extinguish different types of fire. Before discussing the fire cylinder types. their working and their usage, we will firstly understand the fire classes.

Classes of Fire

Fire is divided into different classes because of the different types of substances that act as a fuel and that cause the fire to start. Fire is categorized into 6 classes. These classes are as following:

Class A Fire:

Class A fire is caused by ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper, textile rubber, trash or some other solid materials.

Class B Fire:

Some flammable liquids such as gasoline, acetone, kerosene, grease, paint, and alcohols can start the fire. These flammable liquids can start class B fire.

Class C Fire:

The source for class C fire is flammable gases. Most commonly flammable gases include methane, butane, and propane that have the potential to cause an explosion. Gases add the fuel to the fire and fuel is one of the components of the fire triangle.

Class D Fire:

Some metals such as potassium, sodium, and aluminum can cause the fire. So, the source fuel for class D fire is metals. These metals burn when they come in contact with the fire and air. These metals even in the powdered form can cause a fire.

Electrical Fire:

The electrical fires refer to the category of fires involving electrical equipment. It can start ignition in wires, cables, circuit breakers, and other electrical components. An electrical fire can start because of overloading on the circuits when the supply of electricity is inadequate. Electrical fires are often fueled by motors, appliances, and electronic transformers.

Class F Fire:

F class fires involving cooking oils such as in deep-fat fryers. Greases, cooking oils, vegetable fat, and animal fat are all fuel sources

Fire Cylinder Types

Fire cylinders are of different types. Generally, a fire extinguisher is categorized into 5 types. The division is on the basis of different types of extinguishing agent filled inside the cylinders. What type of cylinder you need for your protection from fire depends upon what kind of fire you are expecting? Each type of fire cylinder is available in different sizes also. Now I will write briefly on each type of fire cylinder type.

DCP Fire Cylinder:

DCP fire cylinder contains a powder which is a mixture of Ammonium Sulphate and mono Ammonium Phosphate. This power is very effective fire extinguishing agent. DCP fire cylinder is one of the most versatile fire extinguishers because it can work effectively on multiple classes of fire. This cylinder can work effectively on Class A, Class B and Class C fire.

Because of its versatility, it is widely used around the world for extinguishing the fire. When cylinder discharges a powder or extinguishes agent over the flames, the powder creates a barrier between the oxygen and the fuel substance and eventually smother the fire and prevent re-ignite after apparently being extinguished successfully.

CO2 Fire Cylinder:

Co2 Fire cylinder is filled with inflammable Co2 gas. CO2 gas is a very effective fire extinguishing gas and according to the view of certain chemists, it can quickly knock out the fire. Because CO2 gas is heavier than the oxygen so when the cylinder discharges CO2 gas it suffocates the oxygen and cutting off its supply to the flames. The second point is that its temperature is very low and when the user operates the cylinder, it discharges very cold snow that cools down the burning substance. CO2 Fire cylinder can be used to extinguish Class B and Class C fire. A CO2 fire extinguisher can be sued to extinguish an electrical fire. Fires can quickly re-ignite once the CO2 has dissipated into the atmosphere, so they do not offer post-fire security.

Foam/AFFF Fire Cylinder:

A foam fire extinguisher is a very versatile fire extinguisher and is Ideal for multi-risk usage. A foam fire extinguisher is suitable for Class A (ordinary combustible materials) and class B (Flammable liquid) fire. Foam Fire extinguishers effectively knock out the fire and prevent re-ignition. Foam works on solid fires by wetting and cooling the lighting object. Foam has a cooling effect on the fire and cools down the burning substance. The foaming agent on burning liquid creates a blanket between the flame and the fuel, extinguishing the fire. Foam extinguishers are used by hospitals, residential property, and buildings where flammable liquids are stored.

Water-Fire Cylinder:

A water fire extinguisher is one of the easiest and cheapest methods to extinguish the fire because the extinguishing agent is not expensive. Water extinguishers are ideal for Class A fires consisting of paper, wood, straw, coal, rubber, solid and plastic. Water fire cylinder contains water as an extinguishing agent. The cylinder discharges water ta a very high pressure which helps in extinguishing the fire. Because water has a cooling effect so it cools down the burning substances. Secondly, the cylinder discharges water at very high pressure and this high pressure extinguish the fire. They cool the fire by soaking it and the materials with water. This extinguishes the flames, absorbing heat from burning objects.

Halotron/Clean Agent Fire Cylinder:

Halotron fire cylinders contain the halon agents as a fire extinguishing agent. They extinguish the fire by removing the heating element from the fire triangle. Clean agent extinguishers are effective on Class A, B and C fires. Halotron fire cylinder extinguishes the fire without damaging assets of the building. It is used to shield valuable and important electrical equipment. Halotron Fire Extinguisher is a clean agent that is user friendly, very reliable and is suitable to use in a different environment. It is very different from other types of fire extinguishers. It is non-toxic.

Fire Cylinder Refilling:

No matter what type and size of the firing cylinder you are having, it requires refilling. The extinguishing agent filled inside the cylinder, get expired after a year or immediately after its use. Usually, the fire extinguisher expires after a year. When the extinguishing agent inside the cylinder expired, the user has to refill it whether users use it or not. Fire extinguisher refilling is very crucial for the proper maintenance and working of the fire cylinder.

For refilling, you must have to appoint a credible and professional service providing company. Because refilling is not an easy task so it must be done by some professional personal.

Fire Cylinder Use

Once you got all the basic knowledge about the fire extinguisher, the next question is how to use fire cylinder? A fire extinguisher cannot be used accurately by anybody. For using it accurately, you must get some training. So that in case of any emergency you will be prepared need to put out a fire.

People usually used P.A.S.s technique for using the fire cylinder.

P. Pull the pin on the fire extinguisher in order to break the tamper seal.

A. Aim the fire extinguisher low, with the nozzle pointed at the base of the fire.

S. Squeeze the handle of the fire extinguisher to release the extinguishing agent.

S. Sweep the nozzle from side to side while pointed at the base of the fire until it is extinguished.
